Unconventional SMB - Issue #1

It's only up from here!

Let’s get this started!

Welcome to the Unconventional SMB newsletter! If you have not subscribed, please join to be connected with new ideas, technology, resources, and amazing people who are changing the way businesses are successfully operated. We are happy to have you join us on this journey. Here we go…

A little background, then onto the good stuff

The idea to start a newsletter was born during the early days of my Entrepreneurship through Acquisition (ETA) journey. While feeding my curiosity and consuming any content I could find about this journey it became abundantly clear that the learning journey was disjointed. Finding good content, resources, and people to talk with takes effort. Perhaps that statement is true for any learning adventure, however, this seemed more than typical. Think about the scale of what we are talking about when we say SMB. We are talking about 44% of the US GDP and to the North, Canada SMBs represent 98% of employer businesses. There is the ETA model, the landscape of different industries and subcategories, B2B and B2C, solutions types (product, services, SaaS), management processes, strategy, financing, etc. Then once you have acquired a business the real work begins with operating, carrying on a legacy, and growing the business with a purpose. Now let’s throw in a less common concept of Regenerative Business and the monumental shift required in our thinking to successfully grow our businesses for the future.

US economy—44 percent of GDP, close to half of all employment, and half of the roughly $370 billion in overall tech spending

The purpose of this newsletter is to share learnings throughout a journey of entrepreneurship through acquisition providing value to existing business owners, searchers, new operators, and investors.

Our mission is to provoke conversations that encourage SMB owners to become better stewards of the foundation of our economy, communities and environment.

Let’s see where this journey takes us…

This is an Experiment - Let’s set the expectations

Remember back in high school when doing experiments in the chemistry lab? The same rules and expectations apply here.

  • Things will blow up. ie: Ideas or concepts may prove to be wrong, or wrong when used in specific situations

  • The value is in the learning - the fun is in the journey. You need to be able to laugh along the way

  • Conversations lead to better execution and better results

  • Disagreement is encouraged, unkindness will be expelled

This will be messy to start and potentially for a while but it will get better.

“Unconventional thinking & action are how we make monumental, positive impacts on our future. Small steps every day.”
